We’ve all had it at one point in our lives; that stack of titles still unopened, gathering dust on the shelves. Maybe they consisted of Christmas presents you didn’t really ask for, or a title you’ve just never reached for when looking for something new to play; still they sit – ageing within their polythene tomb – trade-in value decreasing day by day. You have to hang on to it. It’s not worth the hassle of taking to town. I mean, what desperate idiot would trade in a copy of Resident Evil 5 for just over a fiver….
The early months of a new year usually prove a golden opportunity to hack away at that pile of games, but with so many huge titles jam packed into 2010’s opening season, I haven’t even had chance to stop and take a look. I read the other day that even Sir Patrick Stewart has a pile of shame! And if the captain of the Enterprise can’t micro-manage his unplayed titles, who the hell can?
So how do you deal with it? Do you let them build up until it becomes an impossible task to ever topple? Does it get to a point (which I face all too often) when you’re trading in games you’ve never even played? I know that our very own Manuel is constantly battling with one of the biggest piles I’ve ever seen. So how do you discipline yourself? A new game as a reward for finishing an older title?
Are there any titles that have lingered in your pile that took an eternity to get to? Or even there after years of gathering dust. I know I’ll never finish The Last Remnant, even though it sits there and taunts me from the shelf. But Why? Because of a stupid achievement layout. Why play a game for 40 hours and then have it not let you go back for an achievement you’ve missed? Not fun.
So what’s on your pile of shame? And why?

Two Worlds…urgh, bad voice acting, broken combat, non user friendly and an odd plot. i know i’ll get round to it when im lacking any other good title, it’ll fill in the lull before a slew of release dates. At the moment we are spoilt for choice with a stream of hot new titles comming out but it won’t last forever, thats when i start the neverending hunt for those last few achievement points…still trying for the 1000 on Amped 3 lol
I must say, i respect your efforts you’ve put into Amped. It’s not an easy game and you’ve put some serious time in there!
My pile has been blitzed! I’ve only got four games on top of the unit, and those are all multiplayer.
It has, however, been replaced with all sort of impulse purchases on Steam. At least that’s not quite so visible though.
So a digital pile of shame? That brings a whole new dynamic! Oh technology – spare us!
I’m with Manuel here. I’ve Ghostbusters, Dead Space and Batman all on Steam just waiting for me to play them. And those are only the ones I can remember.
Second Riddick Game,… errrrr Still not really got into Amped since day 1… still sitting there, spent loads of the Fallout expansions and never done them all. Got the new Tekken i’ve hardly played either. I work from home so i try and get an hour in during lunch everyday, so its no excuse…..
A host of bargain RPG’s for my PC,, whole baldurs gate collection bought purely as a memento of how much i enjoyed them but not got stuck into. Likewise my original purchase of Bioshock for the PC remainded sealed for a while, until I borrowed it again off Pogo for the xbox and can’t believe it’s taken me this long to get into it!
For me I find all my games become part of the pile unless I am completely engrossed into the story that I cannot put the game down.
Sometimes I find that my attentions might wander to a new game coming out thus the previous game I was playing would be left to play another day…
Resistance fall of man got to the point where I was so fed up of trying to get past almost impossible sections with no save point in sight (also whilst having better FPS like COD) that I traded it in without completing it. This has also tarnished my want to play the second one so much that I may never get round to playing it.
also in my pile are GTA4, Infamous, Resi5, Orange Box and many more.
I will get round to completing them ….honest! :p
Orange box in the pile of shame?!? Get on that Stefan!
My pile of shame is quite small, comprising only Gears of War 2 at the moment.
Sadly, my pile of near-shame, that is, games I’ve opened and played once, is huge including Dragon Age, Red Faction 2, Left for Dead 2, WET, Mirror’s Edge, GTA4 and Section 8.
That’s not an indictment against those games, more a statement about impulse buys vs free time.
Impulse buying especially on steam is indeed a killer! That said Andrew I downloaded the Section8 demo first and stayed clear of that one. It seemed to be a very blatant rip-off of Quake Wars ET (like literally the same game with different maps/skins) and I know how much I played that game…………
