Of course they did start a long time ago as an actual get together where like minded people could discuss ideas. The use of the internet has now made that far easier and so whilst the conference itself may not be as important as it once was to the spread of ideas the hobnobbing and networking surely are. After all, if nobody talked to them or made announcements, they'd soon stop going. I can see it becoming frustrating for attendees at times, but does it ever actually impede on the sessions that people attend?
