…and relax. Ken Levine’s 2K Boston team has finally revealed their formerly secretive project to the world, and it’s taking shape as an above-ground pseudo-prequel to the original Bioshock.
Make that miles above ground actually, as Infinite tells its tale of social and political unrest amidst the backdrop of ‘Columbia’: a floating Steampunk city suspended miles above ground and held together with a series of entwined ropes and hastily-crafted crossings.
[tweetmeme]“When it came to begin work on BioShock Infinite,” said Ken Levine, creative director of Irrational Games, “we only had one rule: No sacred cows. This game is both true to what people love about the series and unafraid to question every assumption.”
One of those major assumptions was that you’d be exploring the city alone, but AI companion Elizabeth breaks that notion, and looks set to take on a similar role to that of Alyx Vance in Half Life 2.
“To bring Elizabeth to life, we had to build brand-new animation and AI systems.” Levine continued. “To create wide-ranging indoor and outdoor firefights at 30,000 feet, we had to rethink, rebuild and expand the BioShock arsenal. The only thing gamers can be certain of is this: the rules of the BioShock universe are about to change.”
Exciting doesn’t even cover it. Check out the first two screens above, and the trailer below. Roll on 2012.
